 SEO Guide: Google reveals how its algorithms work

In November 2022, Google announced the release of a guide to ranking systems in Google Search . [1]  This document explains which ranking systems are currently used by the search engine. While SEO experts will likely not learn anything new, this source of information is very informative for novices and amateurs.

In addition, an SEO glossary is provided to help understand the terms frequently used in the field. This vocabulary is very useful to know for anyone wishing to improve the organic referencing of their website! Current classification systems

Here’s a list of the algorithms in use today. These ranking systems are essential to know if you want to improve your site’s visibility on Google’s search results.

  1. Google BERT  : AI analyzes word combinations to understand user intent.
  2. Crisis information  : Google distinguishes here between personal emergencies (suicide, assault, etc.) and SEO alerts (natural disasters, large-scale crises, etc.).
  3. Deduplication  : cleaning up results to avoid showing two similar contents in the SERP.
  4. Exact domain name match  : The system does not favor domain names that exactly match a specific query.
  5. Freshness of information  : Depending on the news and the type of search, Google may prioritize the most recent information.

Outdated filing systems

Here is a list of systems that cn leads are no longer used by Google. Note that they have not completely disappeared, but have simply been integrated into newer Google algorithms .

  1. Hummingbrid  : Google’s first algorithm for assigning meaning to words. Note that while Rankbrain isn’t active, this system still appears to be in use.
  2. Mobile-friendliness  : Sites that were best suited to mobile viewing were favored. This is still the case, but it’s an integral part of Page Experience.
  3. PageSpeed  : Loading speed (especially for mobile versions) is also included in “Page Experience”.
  4. Panda  : Thanks to this algorithm, original and high-quality content has been favored since 2011.
  5. Penguin  : Announced in 2012, this marked the beginning of Google’s fight against spam.
  6. Secure sites  : An HTTPS site has an advantage over an HTTP site. Again, this is part of the “Page Experience” ranking system.

Please note: All of these factors are still being considered! These algorithms are no longer relevant, as they have been integrated into other algorithms.
